Denmark captain Christian Poulsen announced on Monday that he was calling time on his international career and was also considering his club future after seeing out his contract with French side Evian.
"There are young players coming through who are passing ahead of me so my role in the team is no longer the same," the 32-year-old midfielder said on the website of the Danish Football Federation (DBU).
Capped 92 times, Poulsen has played in two World Cups and two European Championships tournaments.
Bofore arriving in France in 2011 from English Premier League giants Liverpool, Poulsen played for Schalke 04 in Germany, Spanish side FC Sevilla and Serie A club Juventus.
The federation said that Poulsen was not sure which club he would play for next after a good first season with promoted Evian, who finished ninth in Ligue 1 last season.
"Christian Poulsen is going to reflect in the coming days on where his future club career will be," the DBU added.
Evian open their Ligue 1 campaign on Saturday at home against Bordeaux.
